An ode to the ‘Harvester’ by Ramkinkar Baij

Harvester, Oil on Canvas / Ramkinkar Baij / NGMA New Delhi

On the occasion of Sankranti (a harvest festival), we share this oil painting by Ramkinkar Baij – the Master Sculptor of India. Looking at the painting, one can guess that this was Baij’s ode to the Harvester in the light of a Famine.

The competition for the Monument to the Unknown Political Prisoner (1952) was perhaps the most important art competition of the Cold-war period. More than 3,000 artists from 57 nations participated, including Ramkinkar Baij. His entry to the competition is also one of his most iconic works: the Harvester / Thresher. You can see the sculpture at Santiniketan.
