A Baul Performance at a Village Fair (Mela) in Bengal

Good things take time. Like this stunning, detailed watercolour painting by Amal Nath Chakladar ( India, b. 1936) which was painted over nearly two decades! The painting offers a bird’s-eye view (or should we say a drone-like-view) of a village fair in Sainthia (Birbhum district) in West Bengal. At the center of the painting you can see a performance by the Bauls (mystic minstrels) in progress.

In Detail: can you spot the various stalls selling livestock, fish, fruits and other wares? In the background, a train passes by.

Untitled (Saithiya Baul Sampradaya, Birbhum), 1965-8 / Watercolour and gouache on paper
